Overview

About Yala National Park

World-famous wildlife park boasting the highest density of leopards and diverse ecosystems.

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s premier and most famous wildlife destination, situated in the southeastern dry zone across the Southern and Uva provinces, bordering the Indian Ocean. Spanning nearly 97,981 hectares divided into multiple blocks, Yala combines a strict nature reserve with a diverse matrix of moist monsoon forests, thorny scrub jungles, freshwater lakes, sandy dunes, and marine lagoons.

Yala is globally legendary for boasting the highest density of Sri Lankan leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya) anywhere on Earth. Dawn and dusk jeep safaris offer visitors thrilling opportunities to spot these majestic apex predators prowling through rocky outcrops or resting on acacia tree branches. In addition to leopards, Yala shelters large herds of wild Asian elephants, sloth bears, wild boars, spotted deer, golden jackals, mugger crocodiles, and over 130 species of vibrant birdlife, including painted storks, majestic raptors, and flocks of migratory flamingos.

Bounded by sacred pilgrimage sites like Kataragama and historic coastal shrines, Yala National Park delivers an exhilarating, world-class wildlife safari adventure immersed in stunning coastal-wilderness scenery.
